Long haul trucking involves transporting loads across long distances. This requires truckers to stay on schedule and use their fuel efficiently. One way this can be achieved is through Exhaust Regeneration. It can offer fuel savings and make a huge difference for long journeys.
What exactly is exhaust regeneration?
Regeneration is the process of removing the accumulated soot and particles from the filter. This can be done by either using engine exhaust heat or by introducing high heat into the filter. On board systems can increase the heat by various means too. Some of this include adding a burner that sits after the turbo, using microwave energy, or a fuel burner. A good working system helps provide good fuel burning and efficiency.
It is also important to make sure that the on-board system monitoring the exhaust regeneration is set. If not, it will not cycle too often and cause bad fuel economy. Running the cycle too slowly, however, can cause engine damage and failure of the DPF filter.
Know Your Filters
One of the most common type of filter used here is the ceramic cordierite. It is also used in catalytic converters because of its excellent filtration efficiency. Another type is Silicon carbide which is used just like cordierite but is less stable thermally.
Ceramic fibre filters are made from several different types of ceramic fibres mixed together to form a porous media. Its benefit is that it can be formed into various different shapes and can suit various applications.
Some of the filters are made from metal fibres that are woven into a monolith. Filters with metal cores let electrical current to pass through them. This can help in the exhaust regeneration process.
There are also disposable paper cores available as well. These paper cores are not designed to be used in the regeneration process and are used a lot in coal mines. The exhaust gases usually need to be cooled before they can pass through the paper core.
Besides from DPF, certain technologies can also help in reducing emissions as well. Fuel additives are a good example of these.
